Innovative Air Filtration at CanAdelaar
Hellevoetsluis, September 29, 2025 – A study conducted by Peutz, a Dutch environmental engineering firm, confirmed that CanAdelaar currently complies with the odor standards established by the municipality for all assessed locations in the surrounding area.
Between April and June 2026, Peutz conducted extensive physical measurements designed to assess CanAdelaar's odor emissions under a range of operating conditions. Measurements were taken at different ventilation levels, during harvesting activities and under representative summer conditions, with greenhouse temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C. The ventilation flow rates from the greenhouse were calculated using the KASPRO model by Wageningen University & Research (WUR), which is considered a renowned model.
The measurements show the positive impact of CanAdelaar’s comprehensive program of investments and operational improvements aimed at reducing odor emissions. As part of this program, the company has so far invested more than €3.5 million in the filtration system*, which has been fully operational since May 2026. In addition to filtration, CanAdelaar has implemented operational improvements to further reduce odor emissions. CanAdelaar has moreover shifted harvesting to the early morning, between 05:00 and 07:00, while the shading screens are fully closed. This ensures that odor generated during harvesting is routed through the active filtration system rather than being released through the roof vents, preventing odor peaks from reaching the surrounding area.
We are encouraged by the evidence that shows our continuous efforts are effective. The fact that actual physical measurements demonstrate that we are operating in full compliance with the applicable tailored standard marks an important step in the right direction for us. At the same time, CanAdelaar recognizes that this is part of an ongoing process aimed at further reducing complaints and addressing any remaining concerns. Innovation and operational optimization continue to be important priorities for us.
*The €3.5 million figure reflects the direct capital cost of the filters, their installation and associated electrical work.
